This section will focus on statistics regarding female participation in physical activity and sport
 

Participation 

  •  95.7% of participants took part in sporting activities in the last year of primary school , with 4.3% of participants stating that they didn’t take part in sport.

  •  43.5% currently take part in sport now at the age of completing the questionnaire, whereas 56.5% don’t take part in sport at all.

  • 82.6% of participants had a change in sporting activity from primary school to secondary school, whereas only 17.4% remained at the same participation rate from primary school to secondary school.

Relationships With teachers

Participants of the survey were asked to describe their relationship with their teachers in primary school sport and secondary school sport.

The following details show the results of this question:

  • "Primary school was great our teachers were lovely and supportive but secondary school teachers definitely took less interest"

  • "Mostly good but often students were scared of the PE teachers "

  • ​"I found P.E teachers showed more interest in the boys sports whereas in primary school the teachers never showed preferences"

Males & Females 

  • 30.4% of participants said they had a female role model in their life that influenced them to take part in sport, in contrast 69.6% didn’t have a female role model.

  • In relation to this 100% of participants had a female coach or P.E teacher.

  • 43.5% did not believe that there was adequate female representation in primary school sport and secondary school sport, where as 56.5 believed that there was .

  • 78.3% of participants found that there was more encouragement for boys to take part in sport compared to the encouragement for girls, however 21.7% did not agree with this statement.

Barriers 

  • 43.5% said they did face barriers , however 56.5% didn’t face any barriers to participation.

  • 95.7% of participants said they enjoyed sport participation at primary education but 4.3% did not enjoy sport participation at primary education. 

Furthermore, participants described what they thought to be the toughest challenges faced by a young female in a sporting environment:

  • "Stigma surrounding women in sports, a lack of support from teachers to push further in comparison to boys".

  • "Not having the correct support from teachers to take the sport on outside of PE lessons. Not having the correct equipment and space to fully accommodate the sport and the football teams being male only".

  • "Access to sport / facilities / embarrassment about taking part in sport during menstruation/ sports clothes / physiological differences between male vs female".

Enjoyment 

The participant's enjoyment was recorded through a number scale which helped determine the level of 'fun' they had during year 6 and year 7 participating in sport. 

The following data reads: 

  • Average enjoyment scored as 6.7/10 

  • The lowest being 4/10

  • The highest being 9/10
